The Newest Best Books For Teens with Witches and Wizards

So many witches and wizards, so little time

In the world of young adult witches and wizards, I say Harry Potter is still king. As J.K. Rowling continues to give us new stories, I always have a yearning to dust off my HP audiobook series and start it over again for the umpteenth time. In fact, I happily blame Rowling for my long list of YA titles that I haven’t opened yet. The list is long, and it includes some of the following best books for teens that I look forward to reading (or listening to) soon.

Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension Book 1) by Andrew Rowe

There’s a tower to be climbed, and Corin is going to climb it, following in the footsteps of his brother. The tower is an ever-changing collection of rooms with traps and monsters, and trials that will bestow magical powers. Did I mention that his brother never returned? All the more reason to go after the promise of magical powers, and possibly his brother.

What do readers say?

“Books that have a world and characters that I care about are rare. Books that I don’t have a clear idea of where they are going are also rare. Sufficiently Advanced Magic manages to be both, and I eagerly await the next book!”Tony, Amazon user. [Review from Amazon]

Blood Magic (Divided Realms Series Book 3) by Kim Richardson

This is the final book in a series of three. Witch Elena and her friends hope to save Elena’s one true love, Jon. They will have to draw upon all their resources as they face new challenges, including a darkness within Elena that has been caused by her black magic. Elena could possibly become a sort of monster herself, will she and her friends overcome everything that they’re up against and save Jon?

What do readers say?

“This series (divided Realms-steel maiden, witch queen and blood maiden) was a page Turner! What a ride! I was up each night til 2 am to finish each of them! The plot has many twists and turns you can’t help but sit on the edge of your seat each book builds up on each other thinking and molding the adventure.
The characters are well designed and stay easy to remember in action scenes. A strong female heroine, princes, revenge, magic and of course romance. (I was all for Jon but deep down I secretly hoped for the witch prince).
I give this 5 stars because not only could I feel the magic theme books are just that magic…. a unicorn among a herd of horses (which there are plenty of horses in this series) I look forward to checking out Kim’s other series, total recommendation to my fellow readers!”

Windwitch: A Witchlands Novel (The Witchlands)  by Susan Dennard

Safi is a truth witch, and her skill lends her the ability to know when someone is being truthful, and when someone is lying. In this second installment of the series, Safi is alone in unfriendly waters, as pirates surround her and threaten to cause a war among the witchlands. She continues to be hunted by a blood witch, that can track her by the scent of her blood. And her love Prince Merik, who has nearly been killed, has to deal with a treacherous sister. This series is bound to become a young adult fantasy classic.

What do readers say?

I loved this book more than the first (Truthwitch). I’ve only read a few series where the second book was better than the first. I liked how this book got more personal for each character. The character building definitely improved, the world expanded and I understand all the types of witches so much better. I can’t wait to see where this story will go. I loved this book and look forward to the next book. I’m just sad that it’s so far away :(.VM-est, Amazon user. [Review from Amazon]

Grim (Reaper’s Redemption Book 1) by Thea Atkinson

This book is just coming out this month. Ayla gets a text from an old friend asking her to meet at an old Gothic cathedral in downtown. Instead of her friend, there’s a crazy tattooed guy trying to make Ayla his next murder story. But Ayla, who doesn’t believe in monsters, finds out that she actually is a monster. Crazy tattoo guy is in for a surprise.

Elementals 5: The Hands of Time by Michelle Madow

This is book five in the Elementals series. Nicole discovered several months ago that she is a witch, a descendent of the Greek Gods. She’s one of five witches with elemental powers, and they’ve journeyed throughout the world to help battle the supporters of the Titans. Now a very dangerous monster named Typhon threatens the world that can only be stopped by a difficult sacrifice. Can they make it? Or will it be too much for them?

What do readers say?

Elementals 5: The Hands of Time is the best Elementals yet! The action, the character interplay, the emotion, everything is so much deeper and more developed. The surprise ending actually made me cry. If you have read 1 – 4, you certainly won’t be disappointed. If you haven’t read any of the Elementals books yet, you should probably start with the first; the others (including this one) will be so much more meaningful.Rich, Amazon user. Shearwater: Ocean Depths Book One by D.S. Murphy

Mermaids and witchery are both found in book one of the Ocean Depths series. This story is about the life of a young woman who’s life is drastically changed after her parents die in a car crash. Moving to Ireland to live with her grandfather, she discovers that her mom had a dark past with untold secrets. Two guys from town have her interests, but what do they think of her? And she’s developing strange powers that she doesn’t understand. People’s lives are at stake, can she stop further deaths from happening?

What do readers say?

“Shearwater is a fantastic story, full of vibrant imagery, interesting ideas and great characters! The unique history involved and the special characteristics of the mermaids/merfolk in the story are intriguing and fun to read about. The story grabs you early on and doesn’t let you go. I read part one when it had originally been released, and now that part two is complete, I’m eager to get the chance to read Book 2! I’ve always been of a mind to like mermaids, and always complained there was nothing that was as interesting as the mere idea of mermaids….and that’s all changed, thanks to Mr Murphy. If you like this book, I highly recommend his others. The magic he weaves is not just in the words, but the story as well!”Grjen617, Amazon user. [Review from Amazon]

Draken (The Southern Fire Series Book 1) by S.B. Nova

Skyla answers a knock at the door, and learns the truth that she isn’t from our world, but from a world of magic and monsters. She finds out that she must return to save her mother, while avoiding her families enemies as the kingdoms are nearly at war. Suddenly thousands of lives are resting on her shoulders, and she only has a small band of punks to help her make miracles happen. How can an unprepared girl do so much?

What do readers say?

“The story immediately drew me in. Skyla is an interesting heroine, whose emotions and insecurities make her a sympathetic character. Looking forward to the next chapter in her adventures. 5 stars from this reader.”nutriaguy, Amazon user. [Review from Amazon]

The Dragon Orb (The Alaris Chronicles Book 1) by Mike Shelton

Bakari, Roland and Alli are young wizards. All three of them are different, but all three of them are tasked with protecting the kingdom of Alaris. The magical barrier that surrounds and protects the kingdom is beginning to diminish, and rebels could pull the kingdom into a civil war. There are secrets to be told and when the barrier falls, the truth will come out. Will they unite? Or fight amongst each other to rule the kingdom?

What do readers say?

“The Dragon Orb (The Alaris Chronicles Book 1) by Mike Shelton is an awesome fantasy tale for young adults but teens and adults will love it too, I know I did and I am 60! There is plenty of action, fighting, intrigue, magic, creatures of all kinds, and a touch of romance. Best of all, a dragon egg! I love the ending but I am NOT telling you that but needless to say, I want the next book! I loved the well developed characters and the many twists in the plot. Wonderful. Great read!”Montzalee Wittmann, Amazon user. [Review from Amazon]

The Shadow Children (The Demon-Born Trilogy Book 1) by L.C Hibbett

This is book one, and book two is coming out at the end of the month. Grace is a Half-Born, and her kind of witch has been hunted by the Angels for too long. The Angels fight to keep control of the barrier that hides the magical world from human eyes. Grace and her family have avoided the Angels while living in the human world, but it’s only a matter of time. Suddenly she’s thrown into the middle of a battle amongst The Shadow Children. Can she protect the people she loves the most?

What do readers say?

“This book was pretty great! I’m always unsure when it comes to demon and angel plot/characters, but I must say that this was a great twist. I couldn’t put the book down. All this mysterious goings on and secrets and other things (don’t want to spoil anyone) made for a fantastic read. Edge of my seats-happy I started before a weekend-get no sleep type of book! I’m so glad I’ve read it, can’t wait for more.”Olga J, Amazon user. [Review from Amazon]

Short Stories from Hogwarts of Heroism, Hardship and Dangerous Hobbies by J.K. Rowling

I couldn’t resist putting this collection into the list. Pottermore Presents had done a number of young adult fantasy books with J.K. Rowling, and this is one of the best. Short stories about the witches and wizards that we know and love, it reveals some of the inspiration behind J.K. Rowling’s writing, and details that we wouldn’t know otherwise. This book sheds light on Minerva McGonagall and Remus Lupin, and a few other characters along the way.

What do readers say?

“I enjoyed reading histories of Minerva McGonagall, Remus Lupine and Sybill Trelawney and learning more about their backgrounds and in Lupine’s case, affliction. This novella kept my attention and I found myself wishing it was longer. I’m sure J. K. Rowling has many more tales that never made it to the Harry Potter books, and I hope she continues publishing them.”JTO, Amazon user. [Review from Amazon]
